Dulles East Downwind Transition
Posted by: AdminXon Friday, September 26, 2003 - 12:00 AM
ADIZ ATC'er Gary Harris gave a presentation at the September 24, 2003 MCAA Meeting describing a "shortcut" when heading south from GAI. He presented what is known as the "East Downwind Transition" at Dulles (IAD). It's often possible to take this route instead of going all the way around IAD, toward MRB, when heading south.

Please refer to this graphic: The Dulles East Downwind Transition (single page, smaller, printable version here).

Gary suggested the following if you'd like to try this transition:

  • File your VFR flight plan with the route "AML-BRV" (Armel VOR, Brooke VOR)

  • After getting your ADIZ squawk code (see Boni's ADIZ Presentation) and departing GAI, head toward HUSEL intersection, remaining clear of the class B and the FRZ.

  • After being handed off to the controllers on 126.1 or 125.8, ask for the "East Downwind Transition" at your requested altitude (1500-2500 ft work well) and tell them you can navigate to CARAS or STAYO, if your aircraft navigation systems allow you to do so.

  • You will likely be cleared into the class B and either told to go direct to CARAS or STAYO (if you have GPS or other way to navigate to them), or given vectors to pass west of the FRZ and east of Dulles.

Notes:

  1. All FARs and NOTAMs must obviously be followed. This means following ADIZ procedures, avoiding the FRZ, not operating in class B without a clearance, etc.

  2. If you have any questions about using this procedure, please ask a flight instructor prior to giving it a try!

  3. Although the controllers will often accomodate you, they are not required to allow VFR traffic to transit the class B if they are overloaded. So be prepared to remain clear of the class B and proceed the long way around if required!

The graphic here shows the ATC graphic of the same intersections.
