Noise Abatement Brochure Available
|
Posted by: AdminXon Friday, January 29, 2010 - 09:38 AM |

Attention GAI Pilots and Visitors
Please review the new noise abatement brochure produced by the Montgomery County Revenue Authority (MCRA). The policy has not changed and reflects existing procedures published in the Airport/Facility Directory... what's new is the color map showing the noise sensitive areas surrounding the airport. The brochure offers helpful tips to pilots on how to fly safely and reduce your noise profile when departing GAI.
Copies of the brochure are available at the airport.
MCAA hosted a meeting at the airport on Monday, January 25 at which we distributed copies of the brochure to representatives of each of the resident flying clubs. We also showed an AOPA video titled "Flying Friendly." Airport manager John Luke and AOPA manager of airport policy John Collins were available to answer questions.

GAI Noise Abatement
|

Happy Holidays, everyone, from your friends at MCAA. As those of you who got my email yesterday already know, we had to postpone last night's meeting because the new noise abatement brochures were unfortunately still at the print shop. A few hardy individuals met at the airport anyway to go over the latest draft of the brochure, and we do plan to try this again sometime in January. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, please abide by the noise abatement guidelines that are published in the FAA Airport/Facility Directory for GAI, which will be reflected in the brochure when available: When departing the airport using Runway 32, turn right to a heading of at least 340 degrees; and jets should avoid departing Runway 32 between 2300-0700.
Last night the MCAA board did manage to re-elect itself for another year of service to you. I'm pleased to announce that I (Meredith Saini) will serve as President of the association for another year. Bill Harral has agreed to serve as our Treasurer yet again, with Michael Nolan serving as Secretary.
We appreciate the generous support of time and effort by the dozen or so other individuals who attend our meetings and events and step up when the need arises. Thanks to everyone who helps to keep general aviation alive in Montgomery County.

Fall Meeting, GAI Updates
|
Posted by: AdminXon Friday, November 06, 2009 - 02:14 PM |
|
Greetings from GAI. I hope that you had a great summer and are enjoying the mostly clear, cool weather of early fall here in Maryland. There are a few exciting things going on around the airport that I'd like to share with you.
MCAA Membership Meeting - December 16
First, our next general meeting will be held here at the airport on Wednesday, December 16 at 7 p.m. This will be an important event and we hope you can attend. In addition to conducting MCAA's official board elections and providing an update on happenings at GAI, we will host a seminar on "Safe and Neighborly Traffic Pattern Operations." Attendees will receive a copy of our brand new noise abatement brochure, which includes an aerial photo of the airport and surrounding neighborhoods, and some tips on how to fly safely while also respecting our neighbors. Our airport manager John Luke has been working hard on getting this brochure published soon, hopefully before the meeting.
Wireless Internet Access
Wifi is finally alive, well and reliable at GAI! Free wireless internet is now available throughout the terminal building and soon will cover the ramp and hangar areas. MCAA would like to extend a huge thank-you to Congressional Flying Club and our airport manager, John Luke, for joining forces on beefing up the equipment so that everyone here can get online from anywhere at the airport.
Pilot Lounge Computers
MCAA would also like to thank John Luke and the Revenue Authority for fixing the computers in the pilot's lounge, with the help of several resident pilots. Both PCs are now up and running and connected to the internet, so pilots can log on to check the weather and file flight plans. If you experience any problems with the computers in the lounge, or if you experience any interruption in the wireless internet connectivity at the airport, please notify John Luke.
Aircraft Maintenance Services at GAI
Montgomery Aviation is no longer providing maintenance services at GAI. DH Aviation (Dave Hopkins) has taken over the operation. To schedule service or for more information contact Dave at 301-527-1001 or visit his website at http://www.dh-aviationmaint.com.

And the winner is...
|

With a total score of 11 out of 15 total points, flight instructor David Yacono won yesterday's Spot Landing Contest. Flying with the TSS Flying Club in N64186 (a Cessna 172 with a secret weapon... 40 degrees of flaps available), Dave made consistent, mostly stabilized approaches, straddling the runway center line as the main landing gear touched down on the first half of the "thousand foot marker" or touchdown zone. Good job Dave!
Coming in close behind were Frank Bosemans, also of TSS and also flying N64186 (do we sense a pattern here?); and Danny Hayes of Congressional Flying Club, who flew N5135R, also a Cessna 172. Frank and Danny scored 9 points each.
A total of 14 pilots flew 9 airplanes. Two additional pilots wanted to participate but we ran out of time! Thanks to both of you for your understanding and kindness to the judges, who were cooking out in the sun toward the end.
We'd like to thank each of you for demonstrating excellent Pilot in Command skills and judgment throughout the event. The only sweat on the judges' brows came from the hot mid-day sun. For that, we consider the event a great success. We hope the pilots had fun and learned something, too, not just from the pre-flight safety briefing but from practicing their art in a fun atmosphere.
Special thanks to Robert Hawkins and Robert Gawler for helping to judge the contest, working the radios, and as always, offering much good cheer.
We hope more of you will consider flying in the contest next year! Thanks again to all who participated.

Golf Tournament A Success!
|
Posted by: AdminXon Saturday, May 30, 2009 - 06:45 AM |
|
Your MCAA raised more than $5,000 in this year's annual Golf Tournament, co-sponsored by the Montgomery County Revenue Authority. The event, held at the county's Laytonsville course on Friday, May 8, was organized by board members Tom Grass and Tom Shioutakon and coordinated by airport manager John Luke. There were 33 golfers and a host of hole sponsors.
Sources close to the event said that the foursome representing the Montgomery County Police department won the tournament with 11 under par.
Some of you may have noticed the flat-screen TV in the airport lobby. The MCAA was able to purchase this item for the enjoyment of airport patrons and visitors largely due to the success of the 2008 golf tournament. Your MCAA board of directors hopes to bring similar improvements your way this year.
Stay tuned for details on the annual Airpark Picnic!
